Gala Concert for the 3rd World Climate Conference, Geneva

From 31 August to 4 September 2009 the Geneva International Center has hosted the 3rd World Climate Conference under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This meeting was the opportunity to bring together scientists, decision makers, politicians and world weather service providers.

The 3rd Conference on climate, building on the achievements of the 1st Conference held in 1979, which led to the creation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (Nobel Peace Prize in 2007), and the 2nd Conference held in 1990, which led to the development of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), has focussed on studying the issues related to climate variability and change, and on how to overcome the challenges that will inevitably arise in this area over the coming decades.

This event has been marked by a gala evening on September 3, 2009 at the Victoria Hall. On this special occasion the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Tommaso Placidi was invited to perform a Beethoven concert, which started with the Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello & Piano featuring Julian Rachlin (Violin), Torleif Thedéen (Cello) and Itamar Golan (Piano) and concluded by the Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”.

The Authorities of the City and Canton of Geneva welcome this initiative with great interest, in that such an event has greatly contributed to strengthening the international influence of Geneva.

Performance: September 3rd, 2009.

(...) Opera companies around the world should kidnap conductor Tommaso Placidi. Italian-born and Swiss-based, Placidi makes Gounod's 1865 overly wrought music sound like the greatest opera ever written, achingly beautiful and intensely dramatic. The Spoleto orchestra is made up of young musicians culled from the best conservatories in the United States and the wannabe professionals play their hearts out for Placidi. It is the best-sounding orchestra I have heard in all my Spoleto years. Placidi reaches into Gounod and literally pulls out the heart strings (...) - PAULA CITRON
